In 2021, Pope Francis instituted a World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly to be held the fourth Sunday in July. The Church will celebrate the Third World Day on July 23, 2023 and, as in the past, a plenary indulgence may be gained. The plenary indulgence is granted, under the usual conditions, to grandparents, elderly and faithful who, motivated by a true spirit of penance and charity:

Participate in the solemn celebration at the Vatican on July 23 or at various functions throughout the world; or,
Devote time to visit, in person or virtually, the elderly in need or difficulty (the sick, the abandoned, the disabled, etc.).

The sick, elderly, and those unable to leave their homes may also gain a plenary indulgence if they unite themselves with the sacred services of the day, offering their prayers, sorrows, and the suffering of their lives to God.

The usual conditions to gain a plenary indulgence are sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion, prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father, and a detachment from sin, even venial.
