On Tuesday, August 2, you can gain the “Portiuncula” Indulgence.
St. Francis repaired three chapels, the last of which is called the Portiuncula or the Little Portion, and is dedicated to St. Mary of the Angels. It is now enclosed in a sanctuary at Assisi (shown to the left).
The Franciscans came to live at the Portinuncula in 1211 and it became the motherhouse of their order. This chapel is where St, Clare made her vows on Palm Sunday in 1212 and where St. Francis died on October 3, 1226.
Following a vision in 1216 of Our Lord accompanied by Our Lady, St. Francis requested that Pope Honorius III grant an indulgence to all who visited the Portiuncula chapel. Later popes expanded the indulgence.
You can gain the indulgence, subject to the usual conditions, by visiting the Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels at Assisi, any Franciscan sanctuary, or any Catholic church, and reciting there the Our Father and the Creed.
