On the last day of the old year and first day of the new year, Holy Mother Church grants plenary indulgences, if the usual conditions are met.
On December 31, a plenary indulgence can be obtained by the solemn recitation or chant of the "Te Deum" in thanksgiving for the blessings of God during the year. On January 1, a plenary indulgence can be obtained by the solemn recitation or chant of "Veni Creator Spiritus".
The usual conditions for a plenary indulgence to be gained are sacramental confession, Eucharistic Communion, prayer for the intention of the Holy Father, and detachment from sin, even venial sin. If these conditions are not met, the indulgence will be partial.
