On the last day of the old year and first day of the new, Holy Mother Church grants plenary indulgences, if the usual conditions are met.
On December 31, a plenary indulgence may be obtained by the solemn recitation or chant of the
Te Deum (click here) in thanksgiving for the blessings of God during the year.
The usual conditions for a plenary indulgence to be gained are sacramental confession, eucharistic Communion, prayer for the intention of the Holy Father, and detachment from sin, even venial sin. If these conditions are not met, the indulgence will be partial.
